GAM is a command line tool for Google G Suite Administrators to manage domain and user settings quickly and easily. I'm guessing most in this sub are familiar with it, but just in case you are not: Next turn to GAM (I really should have started here to be honest!). Would probably work fine, but too manual for my liking and not practical at the scale I need to work with. Then you've got various permutations of using imap and a fat mail client (like Thunderbird) as a go between to facilitate the email migration. Google in their wisdom apparently don't have a way to import. I was very close to moving forward with this method, until I started reading about trying to restore emails backed up by this process. This is more of a user-driven process, but at least you can selectively backup emails based on labels this way. Not suited for the selective migration of email. But this really seems to be designed more for when a user is leaving your org, and you want to transfer en masse between accounts. Within Gsuite admin console you've got the data migration tool. Easy right? Surely Google have tools for this?. The ticket that came across my desk sounded simple enough on the surface- "please copy all the emails pertaining to the secondary role from one staff member to another". With this secondary role, the first staff member has got literally years worth of emails relating to the role, organized in their Gmail with various labels (not my choice/preference to use email as a filing system, but this is what people do unfortunately). A different staff member is taking up the secondary role. This month they are stepping down from the secondary role (but continuing in their primary role). A staff member here has, in addition to their primary role, been performing a secondary role for some time. In the hope of helping out someone in future I thought I'd post my solution here.īackground- We use Gsuite for all our email / collaboration needs. I've come across one of those problems where it doesn't appear (according to my Google searches at least) that many people have needed to tackle before. Restore emails using: gyb -email restore -local-folder "Migrated Emails" -service-account Backup emails using: gyb -email -search "label: -service-account
